Statice Flowers

Also called sea lavender (Limonium sinuatum), Statice flowers are long-lasting annuals with sturdy stems and compact, colorful blooms. With a misty and seafoam appearance, statice symbolizes remembrance. These plants belong to the Mediterranean region and are therefore heat and sun-loving. The stem of the plant has an interesting structure and is stiff and winged along the outer surface having tiny little hairs. The leaves are flat and pointed and grow upwards towards the blooms at the top of the stem. Statice works beautifully in mixed borders, rock gardens, cut flowers, dried arrangements, and cutting gardens.

How to Grow Statice

Statice can be started from seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost date. Start seeds indoors in a tray. Sow the seeds ¼ inch deep in the soil and cover the seeds with a thin layer of vermiculite or peat. Keep the soil moist with firm lightning. The seeds will emerge in 21-30 days. After the seeds have emerged, place the tray near a windowsill to provide plenty of light. You can transplant it outdoors after the frost has passed.

Statice care is minimal once the plant is established.

Sun

Statice is a heat-loving plant, plant it at a sunny location with full sun for the best blooms.

Soil

These hardy plants do well in well-drained fertile soil. It can grow well in sandy loam and also in clay soil with good drainage and air circulation.

 

Water

Statice plant is water-tolerant and its water requirements are low. So water your statice plant once or twice a week when it’s fully grown.

Fertilizer

A water-soluble fertilizer can be applied every two weeks for regular nourishment as the plant blooms from early summer to late fall.

Common Pests & Diseases

In soggy soil, these plants might suffer root rot and crown rot. Common pests and diseases can include anthracnose, aster yellow, aphids, armyworms, and mealy bugs.
