You may have heard about organic gardening but did you know that you can also make your own organic compost? In this article, we’ll show you how!
Composting is an easy way to recycle food waste into soil that will grow nutritious vegetables. It’s also a great way to reduce the amount of trash going into landfills.
Start with a pile of leaves or grass clippings
To start making compost, first gather some materials. Leaves and grass clippings are good starting points because they contain lots of nitrogen, which helps plants grow. Add any other organic matter, such as kitchen scraps, paper towels, coffee grounds, cow dung and so forth. Then mix everything together until it looks like a nice, dark brown mixture. Finally, spread the compost evenly across your garden beds.
Cover it up with soil
If you’re looking to start an organic garden, you should first cover your pile of compost with soil. This will help keep out pests and weeds while allowing oxygen to reach the compost. Then, once you’ve covered the pile, wait until the temperature reaches between 50°F and 70°F (10°C and 20°C).
Water it regularly
Once the temperature has reached the right level, add some manure and other organic matter to the pile. Add more material as needed to maintain the proper moisture levels.
Wait until it’s ready
It takes approximately three months for an average compost pile to reach maturity. If you’re impatient, you can speed up the process by adding additional materials to the pile every few weeks.
Once you’ve made your compost, you need to let it sit for at least six months before using it. This will allow the bacteria to break down the food into nutrients that plants can absorb. After that, you can plant seeds directly into your new soil.
