Method
Take Gahat dal, wash it properly, and soak the dal in water for two hours to ensure even cooking. After the dal is soaked, put it into a pressure cooker and add water bay leaves, cardamon, anise, salt, and 1 tbsp of oil. Put the pressure cooker on gas and cook until 4-5 whistles. Meanwhile chop onions, tomatoes, green chilies, and coriander leaves.
Now take some oil in a pan and add cumin seeds, dried red chili, and asafoetida. Once the cumin seeds start turning brown add chopped onions to it. Saute till golden brown and then add ginger-garlic paste, green chilies, and tomato. Stir so it doesn’t stick. After the masala separates the oil add turmeric powder, red pepper powder, and coriander powder. Add some water to mix it properly. Once the masala is ready, add dal to it. Cook for 2 minutes and add chopped coriander leaves.
