Growing plants in water
  1. Begonia
Begonias are beautiful and popular plants that can be grown both in soil and water. Growing begonias in water is an excellent way to propagate them and it is a simple process. Choose a healthy begonia stem that is at least 4 inches long. Cut the stem at a 45-degree angle just below a node. Remove the leaves from the bottom half of the stem. Place the stem in a container filled with clean, fresh water. The water level should cover the bottom half of the stem. Put the container in a bright, indirect light. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh and prevent the growth of algae and bacteria.
  2. Coleus
Take a cutting from a healthy coleus plant. Choose a stem at least 6 inches long with several sets of leaves. Remove the leaves from the bottom 2-3 inches of the stem. This is where the roots will form. Fill a glass or jar with water and place the cutting in it. Make sure the bottom 2-3 inches of the stem are submerged in water. Place the glass or jar in a bright location, but out of direct sunlight. Change the water every few days to keep it fresh and oxygenated.
  3. Bamboo
Bamboo is an easy-to-grow houseplant. For growing Bamboo in water, look for a healthy stem with bright green leaves. Place the stem in water and replace the water every week. Bamboo grows best in indirect bright light so place it near a window where it gets 5-6 hours of indirect sunlight. Use a liquid houseplant fertilizer every three to four weeks.
  4. Philodendron
Choose a healthy Philodendron stem with at least two leaves. Cut the stem about 4-6 inches from the base using a clean, sharp pair of scissors or pruning shears. Remove the bottom set of leaves from the stem, leaving a bare stem about 2-3 inches long. Fill a jar or vase with water. Place the Philodendron stem in the water so that the bare stem is submerged, but the leaves are not touching the water. Place the jar or vase in a bright, warm location, but out of direct sunlight. Make sure to change the water every few days.
  5. Snake Plant
Choose a healthy Snake plant leaf with a good section of the rhizome attached. Rhizome is the underground stem that connects the leaves. Cut the leaf near the base using clean and sharp pruning shears. Cut the leaf into several sections, each with a small section of rhizome attached. Each section should be about 3-4 inches long.
Fill a jar or vase with clean water. Place the Snake plant sections in the water so that the cut ends of the leaves are submerged, but the top of the leaves are not touching the water. Place the jar in a bright, warm location, but out of direct sunlight, and change the water regularly.
